After the death of her adoptive mother, optometrist Hortense Cumberbatch (Marianne Jean-Baptiste) becomes the unwitting catalyst for family revelations when she traces her birth-mother. The rather contrived twist is that upwardly-mobile Hortense is black, her working class mum is white.
