Not surprisingly, the French authorities denied permission for Saint Genet to use a real prison for his movie of brutal, romantic love.

Exterior shots of the notorious La Sante prison in the 14th arrondissement of Paris (where Genet wrote The Miracle of the Rose while in residence) were filmed clandestinely from an apartment over the road.

The prison interiors were staged on sets built above Nico Papatakisí La Rouge Rose basement nightclub, which stood on the rue de Rennes in Parisí Saint-Germaine-des-Pres district.

The fantasy forest scenes filmed on Jean Cocteauís estate at Milly la Foret near Fontainebleau.
