God destroys two cities, notorious for their gross decadence
(though, since this is 1962, the debauchery doesnít
seem to go much beyond leering), while tight-ass Lot
(Stewart Granger)
and his snotty-nosed cronies escape.
This turgid epic was jointly directed by Robert
Aldrich (Whatever
Happened to Baby Jane?) and a pre-Dollars Sergio
Leone.
Touted as a real shocker in its day, the film now ambles
along on Saturday afternoon TV, but at least has the
benefit of spectacular location filming. The battle
scenes and the flood were staged near Marrakech
in Morocco.
The twin cities of sin are portrayed by AÔt
Ben Haddou, the spectacular desert town about
twenty miles northwest of Ouarzazate on the Marrakech
road (frequently seen onscreen, in films such as Gladiator
and Lawrence
of Arabia).
