Alien | 1979
Not surprisingly, there’s nothing to see of Ridley Scott’s classic sci-fi horror, set as it is entirely aboard a space freighter, with weirdly effective alien planet sets – and the creature itself – based on designs by Swiss artist HR Giger.
The live action scenes were filmed at Shepperton Studios, west of Shepperton Green off the B376 in Surrey, while scale models were photographed at the longtime home of Hammer Films, Bray Studios, Down Place near Maidenhead in Berkshire. Bray Studios has since closed and its future is uncertain.
The alien egg chamber, in which Kane (John Hurt) encounters the Facehugger, was built in the disused Acton Lane Power Station in west London, which is where James Cameron’s sequel, Aliens, was filmed. The building has since been demolished.
