Julien (Gaspard Manesse) slowly begins to realise that the newcomer at his Catholic boarding school in Occupied France is Jewish, and being hidden by the monks. The ‘Couvent des Carmes Petit College St Jean de la Croix’ is Institution Saint-Croix, 1 rue des Jacobins, in the town of Provins, 50 miles southeast of Paris in the Seine-et-Marne department.
The church was enlarged in the 13th Century to house a piece of the true cross (no, really) brought back from the Crusades.
Provins is a fortified Medieval town, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. When Julien and Jean (Raphael Fejto) are returned to the school by German soldiers after getting lost, they enter the town through the historic Porte de Jouy (Jouy Gate), the northwestern entrance to the town on rue de Jouy.
