Backdraft location: the Chinatown firehouse: Southside Firehouse, West Cermak Road, Chicago
Ron Howard’s firefighter epic – great conflagrations, sudsy plotlines – was filmed in the Chicago neighbourhoods of Oak Park (home to the Frank Lloyd Wright museum and many of his houses – the elevator shaft scenes filmed here) and Hinsdale.
The fire stations are at Archer and Sacramento Streets; and the Southside Firehouse, West Cermak Road, in Chinatown a few yards west of the Cermak-Chinatown el station on the Lake/Dan Ryan line.
The funeral scene filmed in the prestigious 1860 Graceland Cemetery, last resting place of Chicago’s 19th century notables and such household names as architect Mies van der Rohe, storeowner Marshall Field and sleeping-car inventor George Pullman. It’s on North Clark Street at Irving Park Road, Wrigleyville.
The final huge parade of 2,000 firefighters was filmed in central Chicago, on Michigan Avenue, at the foot of the famous Wrigley Building.
