Back To The Future (1985, dir: Robert Zemeckis)

Michael J Fox, Christopher Lloyd

CALIFORNIA

Spielberg-produced fantasy with Michael J Fox zooming back through time and having to engineer his own parents' romance in order to be born. Eric Stoltz was the original Marty McFly, completing five weeks' filming before departing with that old faithful 'artistic differences'.

The famous 'Mill Valley' town square was built on the Universal lot, where it was badly damaged in the fire of the late 80s.

The 'Twin Pines Mall' (later the 'Lone Pine Mall' - Fox demolishes one of the pine trees escaping from the Peabody family in 1955) where Doc Emmett gets gunned down by irate Libyans, is the Puente Hills Mall on Colima Road in City of Industry, east of LA. Lea Thompson's house, outside which Fox disrupts the accident which leads to his parents meeting, is 1727 Bushnell Avenue in South Pasadena. Big lummock Biff lives down the road at 1809 Bushnell Avenue. Doc Emmett's house, '1640 Riverside Drive, Mill Valley' is the 1908 Gamble House, one of LA's great architectural joys, 4 Westmoreland Place in Pasadena, just a little to the south of the Pasadena Historical Society. Built for the Gamble family (as in Proctor and...), the wood-shingle house with Japanese influence is open to the public (tel: 001/818.793.3334). But the front door Fox knocks on, and the house interior, is the Blacker-Hill House. The Doc's workshop, where the DeLorean is stored, is the Gamble House bookshop.

Marty McFly's present-day house is in Arleta, in the San Fernando Valley north of Panorama City. You can see 'Mill Valley High School' out in Whittier, southwestern LA, hometown of Richard Milhaus Nixon, and - yes, it's where Tricky Dicky graduated in 1930 (plotline for Back To The Future IV perhaps?). Whittier Union High School is at 12417 Philadelphia Street at pierce Avenue. The 'Enchantment Under The Sea' dance, though, where Marty unites his parents and invents rock'n'roll, was filmed in the gymnasium of First United Methodist Church of Hollywood, 6817 Franklin Avenue. The barn and ranch exteriors filmed on the Disney Ranch.
