The passing of time has given the best of these low-low-budget comedies an irresistible charm, and this is from the series’ golden age – when the formula had been perfected and before they became stale and lifeless.
The outdoors shop, where Charlie Muggins (Charles Hawtrey) is shown how to stick the pole up (sigh) was Courts (now closed), 19 High Street, Maidenhead, at the corner of St Ives Road.
The ever-lustful Sid Boggle (Sid James) and his mate Bernie Lugg (Bernard Bresslaw) look into the shop’s St Ives Road window and, yes, that's Maidenhead Town Hall – the familiar 'hospital' from Carry On Doctor and Carry On Again Doctor – in the background.
The holiday camp scenes filmed at cold, wet Burnham Beeches, just a little northeast of Maidenhead in Buckinghamshire. Convenient for the studios, Burnham Beeches has been used in countless films, including Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves.
‘Chayste Place’, the finishing school for young ladies, is the much-used Heatherden Hall, the main administration building of Pinewood Studios.
