Un Chant d’Amour location: the prison exterior: La Sante Prison, Paris
Not surprisingly, the French authorities denied permission for anarchic writer “Saint” Genet to use a real prison for his movie of brutal, romantic love.
Exterior shots of the notorious La Sante prison in the 14th arrondissement of Paris (where Genet had written The Miracle of the Rose while in residence) were filmed clandestinely from an apartment across the road.
The prison interiors were staged on sets built above Nico Papatakis’ La Rouge Rose basement nightclub, which stood on the rue de Rennes in Paris’ Saint-Germaine-des-Pres district.
The fantasy forest scenes filmed on Jean Cocteau’s estate at Milly la Foret near Fontainebleau.
