Woody Allen pays homage to the Hall of Mirrors shoot-out in Manhattan Murder Mystery

Orson Welles’ weird film noir used locations in northern California, and in Mexico, where the scenes aboard Arthur Bannister’s (Everett Sloane) yacht were shot on Errol Flynn’s boat, the Zaca, in Acapulco Bay.

Arthur’s wife, Elsa Bannister (Rita Hayworth), dives into the ocean from the landmark Morro Rock, Morro Bay, northwest of San Luis Obispo on the southern California coast.

The restaurant was Sally Stanford’s Valhalla, since taken over by the Chart House chain. As the Chart House, it was open for many years before its doors eventually closed for good. It stood at 201 Bridgway, Sausalito, over the Golden Gate Bridge from San Francisco.

The aquarium is the Steinhart Aquarium, Music Concourse, part of the California Academy of Sciences in Golden Gate Park. Also in Golden Gate Park, at the western end, stood Playland, which provided exteriors for the funhouse seen in the famous climax.

The interior, the dazzling Hall of Mirrors shoot out, was of course filmed in the studio, where a near-full-size funhouse was replicated in the Columbia Studios, now the Sunset-Gower Studios, 1438 North Gower Street in Hollywood.
