Strange psychodrama with Mark Rutland (Sean Connery) strangely titillated by the sexually frigid kleptomaniac Marnie Edgar (Tippi Hedren). Obviously very studio-bound, leaving acres of room for film students to debate whether director Alfred Hitchcock was deliberately concocting a disquietingly unreal atmosphere, or had simply lost interest after star Hedren had supposedly rebuffed a clumsy sexual advance from the director.

Among the few real locations, Marnie arrives in Philadelphia at 30th Street Station, a photogenic location seen again in Witness. Later, she’s spotted by a man from her shady past at the Atlantic City Racetrack, New Jersey.
The horse-riding scenes use the US’ ‘Horse and Hunt Capital’, Middleburg, a small town in the shadow of the Blue Ridge Mountains, northwestern Virginia, about 35 miles west of Washington DC.
Marnie’s hotel is the historic Red Fox Inn, 2 East Washington Street, Middleburg. Dating from 1728, the Red Fox is one of the oldest inns in the US, has been placed on the National Register of Historic Places, and still in business.
