The Shootist location: ‘the boarding house: Krebs-Peterson House, 500 Mountain Street, Carson City, Nevada
John Wayne’s elegiac last turn as a gunfighter dying of prostate cancer (Wayne refused to succumb to the bladder cancer of the source novel).
Although it’s a Paramount movie, the street scenes were filmed on the Western Street of Warner Bros’ Burbank lot. The sparkling location filming is Carson City, east of Lake Tahoe on I-395, Nevada.
The buggy ride was filmed in Washoe Lake State Park, 4855 East Lake Boulevard, in the Washoe Valley, between Carson City itself and Reno.
The boarding house of Bond Rogers (Lauren Bacall), where Wayne sees out his final days, is the 1914 Krebs-Peterson House, 500 Mountain Street, Carson City.
The house is one of the historic sites on the Kit Carson Trail, a two-and-a-half mile path through Carson City’s historic residential district. Sound effects and recorded messages can be found on a special AM frequency at 24 of the houses (and now online). The Krebs-Peterson, of course, features the voice of a John Wayne impersonator.
