Spock is dead, the Enterprise is being decommissioned and Dr McKoy (DeForest Kelley) is acting very strangely. Kirk and the crew risk everything to steal the Enterprise and return to the off-limits Genesis planet to recover Spock's body.

The film was made almost entirely in the studio, but the fal-tor-pan ritual is performed by Priestess T'Lar (Judith Anderson – the malevolent Mrs Danvers in Alfred Hitchcock's Rebecca) over Spock's body at the Lucille Y Gilman Fountain, at the Alumni Avenue entrance to the campus of Occidental College, 1600 Campus Road at Alumni Avenue, in Eagle Rock, east of downtown Los Angeles.
