The Worldwide Guide to Movie Locations

Monument Valley, Arizona

Monument Valley, Arizona

Perhaps the most famous appearance of Monument Valley, Arizona, of course. John Ford claimed he'd seen it and thought "Wow!". John Wayne claimed he'd actually pointed it out to Ford. Actor Harry Carey supposedly suggested the Valley to Ford after having 'discovered' it in the 20s. And Harry Goulding, from the Indian Trading Post, claimed he'd previously sent photos to the studio. It's difficult to imagine anyone stumbled across the location by accident since, despite the impression given by the movies, it isn't actually on the road to anywhere. From the town of Kayenta, on Route 160, take Route 163 north. There's a visitor centre, and an admission charge.

Stagecoach, (1939, dir: John Ford)

John Wayne, Claire Trevor, Thomas Mitchell
