Chalk
Farm Road, NW1: The
Roundhouse
The
Roundhouse , Chalk Farm Road, a disused railway
turning shed which after many false starts now functions as a performing
arts venue, was used for Michael
Yorkís photographic exhibition in Swinging Sixties slapstick
movie Smashing Time.
During
its history, The
Roundhouse has seen many legendary
performances, including Pink Floyd and the Soft Machine in 1966, the Doors, and
Andy Warholís bizarre stage production Pork.
English New Wave director Tony
Richardson (A Taste of Honey,
Tom Jones) famously staged an in-the-round
production of Hamlet, with Nicol Williamson
in the title role, Anthony
Hopkins as Claudius and Marianne Faithfull as Ophelia, which was filmed here
in 1969. Richard Stanleyís 1990 sci-fi shocker Hardware
was also shot here.
