If you love LA, you'll hate New York, and vice versa, right? Well, I'm bicoastal, I love them both.

Among the film-associated hotels I've listed, you'll notice the Vanderbilt Y on 47th Street. As far as I know, it's never featured as a film location (I'm sure somebody will get in touch and prove me wrong on this). The Vanderbilt is where I used to stay when I first visited NY. It was basic, close to Centrral Station and, importantly, cheap.

I noticed that by listing hotels only seen in movies, I was able only to list top-of-the-range establishments, so I thought I'd offer a tip for the budget-conscious film fan. The Y has had a serious makeover since I first stayed there, when its corridors were painted a grim, chocolate brown and there was no security on the door. There's another Y, in Chelsea, the McBurney YMCA, 215 West 23rd Street (tel: 212.741.9226), just across the street from the Hotel Chelsea, which has featured as a movie location. It provided the steam room where Moe Greene is shot through the eye at the climax of The Godfather.
