Chicago is the location for Edward Zwick’s film – a mostly spot-on look at the tug between friendships and relationships.
If you want to check out the bar scene around which the movie is set, take the Red Line north to Clark/Division station, and the buzzing West Division Street. The singles bar, in which Rob Lowe and James Belushi dispense their own brand of charm and sensitivity, is based on, and called, Mother’s, 26 West Division Street at North Dearborn Street, on the north side of the street.

Don’t recognise it? Well, the bar interior was faithfully recreated in the studio, but the actual exterior seen in the film is across the street is Bootleggers, 13 West Division Street.

If you prefer the look of the boisterous beer garden beneath the rumble of the Howard branch of the Red Line ‘el’, where Lowe and Demi Moore bump into each other after a couple of one-night stands, it’s Kelly’s Pub>, 949 West Webster Avenue at North Sheffield Avenue. Close to DePaul University, it’s obviously a student bar. Operating on this site since the repeal of Prohibition in 1933, Kelly’s is still thriving.
