Much troubled epic filming of General Lew Wallace’s religiose tome, which began filming in Egypt – though none of the Egyptian footage was eventually used – then decamped to Italy, before finally retreating to Los Angeles and completing the film in Culver City.
Just about the only remaining Italian footage is the impressive sea battle, which was filmed off Livorno, Tuscany, on Italy’s northwestern coast.
