Cet Obscur Objet du DÉsir | 1978
The final film of Luis Buñuel sees the mischievous Surrealist return to Spain. On a journey from Seville to Madrid, Mathieu (Fernando Rey) tells the story of his sexual obsession with the changeable Conchita (disconcertingly played by Carole Bouquet and Angela Molina in alternate scenes).
The opening scenes, with Mathieu pouring a bucket of water over Conchita, were shot at Seville Railway Station (now completely rebuilt).
Mathieu meets up again with Conchita in Seville, and goes of to see the Cathedral of Seville. Built on the site of a former great mosque, it’s the third largest church in Europe, after St Peter’s in Rome and St Paul’s in London (although when calculated by volume – which is how they like to do it in Seville – it’s the largest). The spectacular adjoining tower is the Giralda Tower, built originally as a minaret for the mosque.
Conchita’s apartment, where Mathieu visits her, is 7 Calle Vida off Calle Agua, behind the Real Alcazar.
