All kinds of weird creatures begin to evolve when a meteorite crashes into the desert at Page, Arizona. The city was founded in 1957 to house workers and their families working on the construction of nearby Glen Canyon Dam on the Colorado River.
Residents must be used to mysterious visitors by now – what with Planet of the Apes and The Greatest Story Ever Told having been filmed here.
‘Glen Canyon Community College’ is California State University, 800 North State College Boulevard, Fullerton in California, chosen because of its "60s business park" look.
The ‘Tumbleweed Pavilion’ shopping mall invaded by the giant flying thingy is Southbay Pavilion, 20700 Avalon Boulevard, Carson, California, on the outside.
Eagle-eyed sci-fi buffs might recognise the interior as Hawthorne Plaza, 12124 Hawthorne Boulevard, Hawthorne, south Los Angeles, to which John Anderton (Tom Cruise) took precog Agatha (Samantha Morton) in Steven Spielberg’s Minority Report. You’d be hard pressed, though, to recognise its quarter mile-long roof, which was used for the freeway chase in The Green Hornet.
Long closed and empty, the Mall now seems likely to be demolished to make way for... another mall. A better one, presumably.
