The Sixties were in full Swing when Lynn Redgrave grabbed an Oscar nomination as the plainish Georgy, sharing a flat with the gorgeous and flighty Meredith (Charlotte Rampling). There were nominations too for James Mason as the predatory older man, for Kenneth Higgins’ b&w photography and for the theme song, sung by folksy group The Seekers, co-written by Tom Springfield (brother of legendary singer Dusty) and Carry On... film regular, Jim Dale.
The clanking metal staircase leading up to the top-floor flat shared by Georgy and Meredith could still be seen in the alley off Maida Avenue alongside the Grand Union Canal at the corner of Edgware Road in Maida Vale, W9 (it’s actually the rear of 449 Edgware Road), until the restaurant next door added an extension.
Further down Maida Avenue, between numbers 15 and 22, is St Mary’s Church, where James Leamington (Mason) finally proposes to Georgy. Maida Avenue was also home to Michael Palin in A Fish Called Wanda (number 7) and John Wayne in Brannigan (number 6).
Leamington’s grand home, where Georgy entertains nursery classes, is the former home of opera singer Dame Clara Butt, near Primrose Hill, at 7 Harley Road, NW3.
The registry office where Meredith finally marries boyfriend Jos (Alan Bates) is the old red brick Hampstead Town Hall, Haverstock Hill, NW3, at the corner of Belsize Avenue, Belsize Park, currently housing community projects.
