Now all-but forgotten (but for connoisseurs of Sixties cinema), this gimmicky, coming-of-age sex comedy was something of a landmark in Swinging Sixties permissiveness. It’s finally been released on DVD with a few of seconds of naughtiness far too shocking for the Sixties (condoms! buttocks!) restored.
It was co-scripted and produced by American Larry Kramer who also wrote the screenplay for Ken Russell’s Women in Love, as well as the play The Normal Heart, and is now a leading gay rights/Aids awareness activist in the US.
Director Clive Donner wanted a locale that was brand spanking new, so, for once, a film managed to resist the lure of the Carnaby Street-Chelsea backdrop. Here We Go... was filmed in swanky new town of Stevenage, on the A602, north of London in Hertfordshire. So new, in fact, that the town wasn’t entirely finished and some of that fresh greenery was, in fact, set dressing.
