Inevitably the set-up becomes more formulaic in the sequel, but Dustin Hoffman and Barbra Streisand add a bit of sparkle as the hippyish parents of Gaylord Focker (Ben Stiller).
Fans of TV’s Fantasy Island will no doubt find the Fockers’ eccentric ‘Miami’ home strangely familiar, which featured in the show’s opening credits.
It’s the Queen Anne Cottage, in the grounds of the Los Angeles State and County Arboretum, 301 North Baldwin Avenue, Arcadia, to the east of Pasadena. Amazingly, the cottage was built back in 1886, and was extensively restored during the Fifties.
The Arboretum is a 127-acre botanical garden, occupying the heart of the historic Rancho Santa Anita. It’s home to plant collections from all over the world, including many rare and endangered species, as well as housing outdoor historical landmarks from major periods of California history.
Its lush plantings provide a regular close-to-the-studios tropical jungle backdrop, seen in the likes of Marathon Man and Anaconda.
The Arboretum is alongside the famous Santa Anita Racetrack, itself a much used location, seen in A Day At The Races, A Star Is Born and Public Enemies.
