David Fincher’s addition to the Alien series was pretty much dismissed on release, but is now often reassessed in the light of the director’s subsequent career. It was filmed mostly at Pinewood Studios in Buckinghamshire, though the surface of the alien planet was Blast Beach, Seaham, alongside Dawdon Colliery on the Durham coast.
Blackened with years of detritus from the Seaham Harbour Blast Furnace, the area was recently cleaned up in an extensive restoration programme.
There was more filming at the nearby, and defunct, Blyth Power Station in Bedlington. The station’s four landmark chimneys were finally demolished in December 2003.
