Jane Campion’s lovingly filmed version of Janet Frame’s autobiography follows the New Zealand writer’s progress from clumsy, withdrawn schoolgirl through eight years of misdiagnosed institutionalisation to her final literary success.
The movie was largely shot in New Zealand, with exteriors around Auckland, and interiors filmed at Morningside.
The older Frame travels to Europe, staying in London and Paris, and finds a short-lived idyll in the tiny coastal town of Puerto de la Selva on the north of the Cabo de Creus peninsula, Spain. North of the Costa Brava, it’s near to Salvador Dali’s former home at Port Lligat.
