Director Michael Powell turns this unlikely melodrama about a group of nuns attempting to set up a convent in the Himalayas into a bizarrely beautiful experience. Amazingly, the far eastern locations were created almost entirely on stages at Pinewood Studios in Buckinghamshire, while jungle scenes were filmed in deepest West Sussex.
The lush forest is Leonardslee Gardens, Brighton Road, Lower Beeding about four miles southeast of Horsham, one of the largest woodland gardens in the UK, planted with exotic blooms.
