After considering locations such as Scotland and northern England, including the Lake District, the unforgiving bleak 'English' countryside of 1247 was found in Northern Ireland, around the Silent Valley area in the Mourne Mountains.

You've not seen a Robin Hood like this, old but not autumnal and mellow like Sean Connery in Richard Lester's 1976 Robin And Marian. This Hood (Hugh Jackman) is a ruthless survivalist with contempt for the sentimental tales that have grown up around him. Tired of the bloodshed he's coerced into one last fight alongside his old companion Little John (Bill Skarsgård,) that leads to tragic consequences.

The forbidding rock wall with the mighty cleft past which Robin and John trek are the Cliffs of Annacoona towering over the Gleniff Horseshoe, one of the country's great scenic drives, a stunning six-mile loop of narrow country road, surrounded by those cliffs and green hills.

The valley, on the northern side of the limestone Dartry Mountains, was scoured out by glaciers during the last Ice Age. It’s a and a 30-minute drive north from Sligo itself.

The film's main location turns out to be the 'Priory of St Clement' where Bridget (Jody Comer) dutifully nurses the sick without questions or judgement.

This breathtaking Medieval stone complex dramatically crowning a great outcrop of limestone is the Rock of Cashel, rising from the Tipperary Plain, far from the sea, about 16 miles northwest of Clonmel way down in the south of the Republic of Ireland.

It's one of the most remarkable collections of Celtic art and medieval architecture to be found anywhere in Europe though few remnants of the early structures survive. The main of buildings – the Round Tower, Cormac's Chapel and the (now roofless) Cathedral – date from the 12th and 13th centuries which makes them the correct period at least for the story.

It's open to visitors with a modest admission charge. The nearest airports are Shannon Aiport (55 miles) and Cork Airport (63 miles).

The towering local forest in which Robin teaches the young Margaret to use the bow is Tollymore Forest Park, Bryansford Road, in the town of Newcastle, County Down, about 30 miles south of Belfast.

Interiors for the cave and the priory's bed-chamber were constructed at the relatively new (opened in 2017) Belfast Harbour Studios, which also hosted studio filming for Robert Eggers' 2022 The Northman.
