Writer Frank Pierson picked up an Oscar for his screenplay, while Al Pacino, Chris Sarandon and director Sidney Lumet got nominations, for this based-on-real-life tragi-comic story of incompetent bank robbers, one of whom was trying to get money to finance his boyfriend's sex change.
The interior of the Brooklyn bank in which Sonny (Pacino) and Sal (John Cazale) are holed up with their hostages was indeed filmed in Brooklyn, but in a garage on 10th Street in Flatbush.
But, more importantly, the street exterior, where Sonny wins over the gathering crowd, was Prospect Park West, between 17th and 18th Streets, just west of Prospect Park itself in Brooklyn. It’s changed a little over the years. The ‘bank’ is now a private apartment block at 285 Prospect Park West (subway: 15th Street-Prospect Park).
