A long, long way from the Airplane! films, director Jerry Zucker makes heavy, glum weather of this version of the familiar Knights of the Round Table legend.
'Camelot' – well, a bit of it – was built alongside the lake at Trawsfynydd, on the A487, six miles south of Blaenau Ffestiniog in North Wales, but much of the city was computer generated.
First Knight uses a bunch of other familiar locations: the thatched village was constructed on the National Trust’s Ashridge Estate, near Tring in Hertfordshire (previously a setting for1967 actioner The Dirty Dozen which filmed at Ashridge House).
The wedding was filmed in St Albans Cathedral, Hertfordshire; forest scenes were shot at Burnham Beeches – site of Robin Hood’s camp in the Kevin Costner blockbuster Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves, and in Black Park Country Park, the convenient woodland area adjoining Pinewood Studios familiar from literally hundreds of movies from James Bond to Hammer films.
The battle scene filmed at the Roman road (known as The Devil’s Highway) which runs to the north of Stratfield Saye, in Hampshire, about six miles south of Reading.
