In the early Seventies, Alan J Pakula made a trilogy of sublime urban paranoia thrillers. Klute was the first, followed by The Parallax View and All The President’s Men.
This moody suspenser has detective John Klute (Donald Sutherland) investigating the disappearance of a scientist and getting involved with neurotic hooker Bree Daniel (Jane Fonda).
It was filmed on the streets of New York, and at the now defunct Filmways Studios, 246 East 127th Street at 2nd Avenue in East Harlem, which has since been demolished.
Bree’s apartment was 441 West 43rd Street, between 9th and 10th Avenues, in the west side area once known as Hell’s Kitchen.
Her apartment was very convenient for the disco, which was The Sanctuary, a former church a few doors east at 407 43rd Street. It’s now the off-Broadway Westside Theatre.
