The school-of-Saul-Bass credits heralds this as a post-What Ever Happened To Baby Jane? shocker, regarded as disturbingly nasty in its day and refused a certificate in the UK by the BBFC until 1967.
The role of Cornelia Hilyard, a wealthy writer trapped in her home elevator while an assortment of ne'er-do-wells rob and terrorise her, was originally intended for Joan Crawford. The same year, Olivia de Havilland also replaced Crawford opposite Bette Davis in the Baby Jane follow up, Hush... Hush, Sweet Charlotte.
Hilyard's mansion, supposedly ‘1132 Lenko Street’, is 1132 South Lake Street, south of West 11th Street in Midtown Los Angeles, just south of MacArthur Park.
