First in the hugely successful series of actioners pairing suicidally on-the-edge Riggs (Mel Gibson) with staid, middle-aged Murtaugh (Danny Glover).
The movie was shot all over Los Angeles – on the southwest peninsula of Palos Verdes, the beachside community of Santa Monica, Studio City in the San Fernando Valley and Inglewood in South Central – as well as at El Mirage, the dry lake bed about 20 miles west of Victorville in the Mojave Desert.
The circular apartment block from which a drugged-out woman plummets to her death in the opening scene, is the International Tower, 700 Ocean Boulevard East, a block of condominiums in Long Beach, beneath which the coveted Mustang Eleanor is parked in both versions of car-snatch movie, Gone In 60 Seconds (1974) and Gone In 60 Seconds (2000).
The rooftop from which Riggs survives a leap with the unwilling suicide, is the Emser Building, 8431 Santa Monica Boulevard at North Olive Drive in West Hollywood.
The villains’ nightclub, where Riggs is tortured, is the – now closed – Ritz Theater, 6654 Hollywood Boulevard (where you'll also find the excellent Skooby's Hot Dogs). The shoot-out is on Hollywood Boulevard outside the Vogue Cinema.
