Brad Pitt plays Death in this overlong romantic fantasy, based on the stage play Death Takes a Holiday, previously filmed in 1934 with Fredric March.
Arriving in New York by helicopter, businessman’s daughter Susan Parrish (Claire Forlani) pops into the Broadway Restaurant, 2664 Broadway at West 101st Street on the Upper West Side, where she gets chatting to a pleasant young man (Pitt).
As they exchange lingering looks outside the cafe, they’re suddenly on the west side of Lexington Avenue, by East 24th Street down by Gramercy Park.
There’s no time for romance to bloom. The young man shockingly falls victim to the Manhattan traffic when he’s hit by a car in front of Mike’s Papaya, 132 East 23rd Street at the junction with Lexington.
The Penthouse Suite of Susan’s wealthy father, William (Anthony Hopkins), is atop the Pierre Hotel, 2 East 61st Street at Fifth Avenue on the East Side. A popular spot, this also supplied Arthur Bach’s luxury pad in the 20011 remake of Arthur, and its ballroom was the site of Al Pacino’s tango in Scent Of A Woman.
Interiors were built in the Teaneck Armory, 1799 Teaneck Road in Teaneck, New Jersey. Built as a facility of the New Jersey National Guard, the armory was renovated in 1997 to become the Soccer Coliseum, an indoor soccer arena. The cavernous space has been used for several film shoots, including Woody Allen’s Sweet and Lowdown and rom-com You've Got Mail.
Parrish’s mansion, where he’s visited by Joe Black (Pitt again), is the Aldrich Mansion, 836 Warwick Neck Avenue, Warwick, on Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island.
