A gift to pub trivia quizzes – ‘Which film featured both Marlon Brando and Thora Hird?’ – this lurid prequel to the excellent The Innocents explains how the fervid relationship between gardener Peter Quint (Brando) and governess Miss Jessel (Stephanie Beacham) gives the children Miles and Flora ideas beyond their years.

‘Bly House’ (which was Sheffield Park in East Sussex for the 1961 movie) is Sawston Hall, a stone-built Tudor manor house, five miles south of Cambridge on the A130. After many years as a private school, the house is currently closed as its future is decided.
