Pandora Reynolds (Ava Gardner) is the heartless tease who falls for the ghostly sea captain Hendrik van der Zee (James Mason) in this dour fable from eccentric director Albert Lewin, gorgeously photographed by Jack Cardiff, and enthusiastically championed by Martin Scorsese.
The little coastal town of 'Esperanza' is Tossa de Mar, near Gerona on Spain's Costa Brava, about 65 miles northeast of Barcelona.
