Seance On A Wet Afternoon | 1964

Seance on a Wet Afternoon location: Marryat Road, Wimbledon, London SW19
Seance on a Wet Afternoon location: home of the kidnappers: Marryat Road, Wimbledon, London SW19

Creepy suspenser with fake medium Myra (Kim Stanley, Oscar nominated) persuading her husband Bill (Richard Attenborough) to kidnap a child so that she can ‘miraculously’ reveal its whereabouts.

There’s plenty of location shooting around central London. Bill shops in the West End, in the fruit and veg market, still going strong on Berwick Street in Soho. Sid Vicious (Gary Oldman) strolls through the same market with his mate Wally in Alex Cox’s Sid and Nancy.

Bill makes phone calls from, what was, the huge Trafalgar Square Post Office, now split up and shrivelled down to a fraction of its original size. Attenborough was back to the same office, on the side of the law, in 1975’s Brannigan, with John Wayne. He picks up the kidnap ransom on the underground, slipping out of Leicester Square tube station.

The couple’s gloomy, and slightly Gothicky, suburban home is 41 Marryat Road at Burghley Road, overlooking Wimbledon Park, SW19, southwest London.
