The ‘Starfleet Headquarters’, where the crew of the Enterprise attends a meeting, was filmed in Henrietta Mears Auditorium of the First Presbyterian Church of Hollywood, 1760 North Gower Street at Carlos Avenue, a block north from Hollywood Boulevard, Hollywood.
The dilithium mines prison of ‘Rura Penthe’, to which Captain Kirk (William Shatner) and Dr McCoy (DeForest Kelley) are wrongly sentenced for the assassination of the Klingon Chancellor Gorkon (David Warner), was a huge set built in Bronson Canyon, Griffith Park, in Los Angeles.
The snowy wastes of penal asteroid ‘Rura Penthe’ itself though, through which Kirk and McCoy trek after escaping with the shape-shifting alien, are the Knik Glacier, about 50 miles east of Anchorage in Chugach State Park, Alaska.
Two locations were stitched together to make ‘Camp Khitomer’, secret site of the peace conference. The foreground terrace and the lake are the Firemen’s Fund Building, 777 San Marin Drive, off I-101 in Novato, Marin County, about 20 miles north of San Francisco in northern California; while cylindrical building in the background is the House of the Book building on the campus of the Brandeis-Bardin Institute, 1101 Peppertree Lane, Brandeis, in the Simi Valley north of LA . You might also recognise the circular towers as the ‘Rock & Roll History Museum’ in Tenacious D In The Pick Of Destiny.
